Scorpio Mining Corporation (TSX:SPM) is a Canadian-based silver and base metal producer in Mexico. Located in the Cosalá District of Sinaloa State, 2.5 hours drive from Mazatlan, Nuestra Señora has proven to be a low-cost operation with the benefit of flexible mining methods and diversified metal production. It boasts a fully mechanized underground operation and a processing facility built for expansion of up to 4,000 TPD. The plant produces zinc, copper and lead concentrates - two of which contain a significant silver component that contributes over 55% of the revenue from metal payable.
The Nuestra Señora operation has a 20-year life with known reserves/resources in the district at current processing capacity. Scorpio's opportunity for growth continues in its Nuestra Señora mine, where many zones remain open for resource expansion, and in the surrounding Cosalá District, where Scorpio controls over 29,000 hectares. Through the 2009 Platte River acquisition, The Corporation acquired over 10,000 hectares of ground adjacent to its existing holdings, containing over 40 known exploration targets and advanced assets. They include the operating La Verde silver-copper mine and the El Cajón silver-copper-gold and San Rafael silver-lead-zinc-copper-gold deposits, both having NI 43-101 compliant mineral resources. All deposits are open for expansion. Outside of Cosalá, Scorpio holds two advanced, high-grade silver properties in the Parral District, Chihuahua State. The Corporation continues to focus on internal growth through aggressive exploration programs in both districts.
Scorpio Mning has launched an aggressive expansion plan that could see throughput increased by ~300% in the next 24 to 36 months. Expansion of the existing Nuestra Señora plant to 2,750 TPD is underway, with expected completion in Q4 2012. The Corporation is also initiating a feasibility study on the viability of a second 4,000 TPD multi-product concentrator located proximal to several advanced deposits located in the north Cosalá District.
Since commencing commercial production in January 2009, Scorpio Mining has reached a level of operational and financial performance that positions it among the best performing silver producers with significant base metal by-product credits in Mexico. The Corporation benefits from an exceptional team with extensive international, project and operational experience. Together with its dedicated Board of Directors, Scorpio Mining maintains a commitment to operational excellence and maximizing shareholder value.
As of November 23, 2011, Scorpio Mining holds approximately 15.5 million shares of Scorpio Gold Corporation (TSXV:SGN; "Scorpio Gold"). Scorpio Gold is involved in the acquisition, exploration and development of mineral resource properties and holds a 70% interest in the Mineral Ridge Property, a former producing gold mine located in Esmeralda County, Nevada.
